Though we may have the best will in the world, it’s hard to stop our kids from occasionally getting a sunburn in hot weather like this. Even if we swore we plastered enough cream on them before they went out to play in the sun, we sometimes get caught out.

But what if there was a way to tell exactly when their sun cream was wearing off and their skin was likely to start burning? Sounds almost too good to be true, but Boots Soltan have just launched new Kids Learn to Reapply UV Detection Stickers, £5 here for a pack of eight, and they’ll tell you exactly when you need to apply a top-up.

These stickers only cost £5 for a pack of eight – which will last each child over a week

They’re also incredibly quick and easy to use, which is great for parents with squirmy little ones, desperate to get outside. The stickers, which you use before applying any sun cream, are purple in colour and shaped like small circular patches.

All you need to do to apply one is lift and remove the tab (like you would a plaster), then stick it on an area that gets fully exposed to the sun, like the upper arm.

Then apply your sun lotion as usual – factor 50 is advised for little ones – and make sure that the sticker also gets coated in the same amount of cream as the body. After a few minutes in the sunshine, the sticker will transform from purple in colour to clear. On cloudy days it can take a little longer for this to happen.

After that, just keep an eye on the sticker and when it begins to turn purple again, you know the sun cream is wearing off and needs re-applying. If your child is old enough to spot the colour change themselves, then get them to watch out for it as it’s a fun way for them to learn about sun safety.

“The sticker will remain clear when skin is protected and fade back to purple as the sunscreen becomes less effective – particularly handy if you’ve forgotten to reapply after swimming and towelling dry,” says Clare O’Connor, Soltan Suncare specialist.

These clever patches are designed to last a full day on the skin (the colour will reset to clear once sun cream is reapplied), and have been dermatologist and paediatrician approved – and are completely waterproof, sweat resistant and hypoallergenic.

To get a little more technical, the surface of the patches use “dermatrue skin mimicking technology” which mirrors the skin’s pore size, so it can accurately copy how your skin interacts with SPF protection. The colour-changing signal is triggered by a UV detection layer, which measures the UVA and UVB exposure using photosensitive dyes.

The handy launch comes after Boots found that a whopping 85 per cent of parents said they worry about their child getting sun damage, and 39 per cent find it hard to estimate the right time to reapply sun protection on their children.

Well we think summer just got a whole lot easier!
