Like that on our body, the muscles in our face need exercise. The difference is that you can work out your visage without lifting a finger. I learned as much upon visiting European-trained facialist Toska Husted at her newly-minted spa in Charlotte, North Caroline. It was there she meticulously got to chiseling as if she were Michelangelo and my face was the Sistine Chapel. Her weapon of choice? A Remodeling Face Machine that uses electric microcurrents to drain, sculpt, and tone your face for firmer skin, less wrinkles, and pyramid cheekbones like Pharrell.

Toska began the treatment my removing my makeup and cleansing the skin. Then she used cult French favorite Biologique Recherche P50 toner, which is infused with alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids, cider vinegar, and Niacinamide, to gently exfoliate and balance my skin’s pH. She followed that with a booster treatment, Biologique Recherche Soin Lissant, to regenerate and de-stress my sensitive skin in kid-glove-like fashion, as well as a bespoke multi-masking session. Finally, she dosed my face with a cocktail of nourishing serums, which would also act as the massage oil.
Toska’s intimidating Remodeling Face Machine combines three types of electric current; Galvanic, which allows the active ingredients to absorb deeper; Low and medium frequency currents, which reshape and tone; and Athermic pulsed high frequency currents that revitalize all over.
“These three currents can be used either separately or in combination offering a wide range of personalized treatments for each skin type,” explains Husted. “Precise adjustment of these parameters is what enables the remodeling process to be activated in both the skin and the muscles.”
When Toska began massaging the forms of my face with the two round and sponge-covered microcurrent nodes, the sensation was unlike anything I’d ever felt. The machine’s hum had my entire face pulsating and as she worked her way towards the center of my face, there was a pungent metallic taste in my mouth. Like licking a battery. It took some getting used to, but as she slowly kneaded the contours of my face, it felt incredibly satisfying.

When she completely one half of my face, she gave me a hand mirror to observe her work and compare it to the other side. The differences was striking: My brow was lifted, my cheekbone was higher/more defined, my nasolabial fold was less prominent, and everything just looked more taut overall.
Once my entire face was lifted and decidedly glowier, it became immediately apparent why women can get addicted to this treatment. Not only is just what the doctor ordered the day before a big event—think a bride prior to her wedding day or a celebrity about to embark on a press tour—like daily exercise, it also benefits you in the long haul.
“The longterm benefits are toned facial muscles, wider and rested looking eyes, more prominent cheekbones, reduced appearance of wrinkles, a more defined facial contour and firmer, and more youthful skin,” she says.
I can only speak to the following week, but simply put: I felt as Bella Hadid as a non-Hadid can feel. One colleague event commented on my fresh, glowy appearance on a Monday morning. It was a staggering feat.
Make no mistake, these kind of treatments are a luxury. Microcurrent facials can run anywhere between $300 and $600 depending on where you go, which is even more eye-watering when you consider the results are cumulative. Toska recommends a course of six weekly treatments, followed by maintenance once a month, which is some serious coin.
However, when you consider that it’s an alternative to a face lift or even Botox, it’s not quite as steep. But if it’s not within your budget, you can seek solace with Biologique Recherche P50’s exfoliating toner, which has become a new classic in my medicine cabinet.
