It’s officially sandal season, and given the new trend of barely-there footwear, I’ve been extra conscious of the state of my feet. Calluses, ashiness, and month-old chipped polish have got to go. One secret I’ve been relying on when these warmer days took me by surprise? Press-on toenails. Yup, I’m talking adhesive fake, painted toenails that give you an instant pedicure. Sounds weird and slightly off-putting, but I am now a big believer.
I wish I could be the kind of person who gets weekly pedicures, but I can’t maintain it. They’re time-consuming. They’re costly (around where I live in Manhattan, they can be $30 on the low end and over $60 on the high end). And, they never last. I am pretty confident in my DIY skills, but self-painting my toenails never turns out as neat as when professionals do it. That’s why I tried Dashing Diva’s Magic Press Toes.
The Magic Press Toes come in an array of designs like holographic colors, French tips, and cutesy fruit designs, which are all honestly a bit much for my taste. The least flashy of the collection appealed to me, however: gold glitter polish with a single accent nail with art. The tiny kit comes with everything you need after you start with freshly removed polish: an alcohol prep pad, mini nail file, disposable manicure stick, and 24 nails in 12 sizes. There is no glue nor LED light necessary for application—you literally just align the flexible “nails” to your nail bed and stick ’em on. The more pressure you apply, the longer they last. Mine stayed put for 10 days!
I loved how easy the process was and how undetectable the press-ons were. They looked put-together and never once chipped or started coming off–and I wore them while soaking in a hot-tub, working out, and hitting my 10,000 steps walking around the city. I also like how customizable they are, I used a nail clipper and file to shape them so they really looked like my own.
I don’t think press-ons could ever replace the indulgent experience of getting a full salon pedicure (hello, foot massage), but on those days where you’re about to walk out the door and realize “Oh, shit, I haven’t done my toenails in a month,” press-ons are your best friend.
My only qualm is that I wish there were more solid colors, since I’d be more likely to wear those. I spotted some over at imPRESS, so will have to try these next.
